Beyond passing trends
serien.lighting develops luminaires for sophisticated architectural settings.
For more than four decades, lighting solutions combining technical precision, clarity of design and craftsmanship have been created at our headquarters in Rodgau, near Frankfurt.
The founders and designers Manfred Wolf and Jean-Marc da Costa have followed a clear principle from the outset: light is an integral part of space. It structures, guides and shapes atmosphere. Every product is therefore defined by the same design rigour – from the initial concept through to the finished luminaire.
LIVING THE LIGHT is not a promise, but our way of working.
Light emerges from the interplay of form, material and technology
serien.lighting develops pared-back luminaires that sit naturally within architecture and interior design.
Design never happens in isolation. It always grows from the interplay of lighting effect, construction, material and use.
The latest LED technology, precise light control and intelligent control systems underpin every development.
Designs are refined until form and function are in balance.
From development, engineering and design through to final assembly, the key stages remain closely interconnected. Final assembly takes place at our headquarters in Rodgau. Individual production steps are carried out in collaboration with inclusive workshops and regional partners.
Metal is at the heart of many of our products, complemented by mouth-blown glass, ceramics, textiles and high-grade plastics.
Combining industrial expertise with a compact company structure enables informed decisions and direct communication.
From design to luminaire
Every luminaire begins with an idea. It is questioned, developed and often revised until nothing can be improved or taken away, and every technical and design decision feels right.
Design, development, engineering, prototyping and production are closely interwoven.
This continuous exchange produces solutions that are technically precise, durable and clear in their design.
Many of our luminaires appear minimalist at first glance. Yet this is never an end in itself; it is the result of a rigorous process of reduction.
As long as something can be improved, simplified or removed, the development is not complete.
Material shapes the design
Glass, aluminium, textiles and other materials are not selected afterwards. From the outset, they shape the construction, lighting effect and character of a luminaire.
Their particular properties give rise to new structural solutions or optical principles. Material becomes part of the design – and design part of the function.
Design culture and dialogue
Alongside designs by Manfred Wolf and Jean-Marc da Costa, serien.lighting has worked with renowned external designers for many years, including Yaacov Kaufman, Uwe Fischer, Hopf & Wortmann, Formfjord and Nextspace.
All products share the same design ethos. Over the decades, this has resulted in a collection with a strong sense of continuity, recognised with numerous national and international awards.
Sustainability as part of the design logic
Luminaires are designed to be repairable as a matter of principle. Components can be replaced, light sources renewed and systems adapted.
Almost all the materials we use are recyclable. The long service life of our products reduces resource consumption across their entire life cycle. We therefore see sustainability not as an added feature, but as the result of considered development.
„Creative thinking and intensive exchange are at the heart of how we think and act. Light is created through dialogue – with architecture, technology and the people who use spaces.“
Jean-Marc da Costa & Manfred Wolf
Over four decades of luminaire design
The company was founded in the early 1980s by Manfred Wolf and Jean-Marc da Costa. Their shared passion for design grew into an internationally established design brand. Today, serien.lighting luminaires are available worldwide.
The building that is now our headquarters – a brick building with an industrial past – has served as a workshop and experimental space from the outset. The combination of design training and technical expertise continues to shape our luminaire development today.
Over four decades of lighting design from Rodgau, Germany.
The serien.book is the first Catalogue of Works to document the full story – from the company’s beginnings to the current collection.
Licht. Form. Material
In 2024, serien.lighting marked its 40th anniversary. To celebrate, the exhibition IN SERIEN. Light. Form. Material. was staged at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main.
Developing solutions together
Together with architects, lighting designers and specialist retailers, we support projects from the initial idea through to implementation.
Our support ranges from the early concept phase and sampling through to unpackaged bulk delivery directly to site.
Where required, we provide sample luminaires, technical documentation and specific planning information.
Tailored lighting solutions
For special requirements, serien.individual develops project-specific solutions. These range from targeted adaptations of existing luminaires to the complete development of complex bespoke luminaires.
Specialist retailers & personal advice
serien.lighting is available exclusively through selected specialist retail partners.
These serien.partners are specialist shops and planning studios that present our luminaires in their showrooms – often in individually designed serien.studios, where the collection can be experienced in depth.
The partners advise customers on selecting, configuring and integrating luminaires into a wide range of interiors and applications. Alongside technical expertise, they bring a precise understanding of lighting effect, proportion and materiality.
