Mariaberg Monastery - Precise lighting for a learning environment₂₀₂₂

The University of Teacher Education St. Gallen combines historic architecture with contemporary learning spaces. The lighting solution by serien lighting sensitively captures this connection and translates it into a clear, minimalist lighting design.

The project utilised 79 ROD wall lights and around 52 Annex ceiling and suspension lights. The Annex lights were finished in patinated brass and, with their warm materiality, blend harmoniously into the architectural surroundings.

A unique situation arose during the installation of the ROD wall lights: they were fitted directly onto existing, handcrafted glass panels. These historic glass panels were originally used for niche lighting – long before electric lighting was available – and were lit at the time by candles or oil lamps.

The combination of the ROD luminaire’s minimalist form with these historic elements creates a fascinating dialogue between past and present. The luminaires’ precise light distribution emphasises the architecture and lends the rooms a calm, clear atmosphere.
