The library on Mittelstrasse is part of the University Library Bern and covers the fields of archaeology, gender studies, art history, musicology, sustainable development and theatre studies. The open-access library provides 70 day-use study spaces and 20 long-term study spaces, wireless access to the eduroam university network, lockers, a UniPrint device and book scanners for students.
Built in 1903, the property at Mittelstrasse 43 underwent a complete refurbishment and is now used by the University of Bern as a flexible, multi-purpose institute building. Wherever possible, the existing building was designed with adaptable, non-specific room layouts rather than tailored solutions. A new building was also added in the courtyard to house a larger specialist library.
